Superheroes with Superpowers!

This week in Ruma rua the awesome superheroes have been learning how to write explanations.  Some of us are writing our explanations for our political campaigns to persuade others to vote for us.  Some of us are writing explanations about which pet is the best pet and why we think this.

Emily and Keira K worked so hard on their pet explanations that they wanted to share their writing with us.  Ka pai korua!

Learning about Place Value in the HQ

We have been looking at representing numbers with base 10 blocks which help us to understand place value and how numbers can be made and broken.  Mrs C taught us a new game called 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS' and we really enjoyed playing boys vs girls.  This is how you play the game:

Mrs C chooses two students to 'verse' each other.
They have to turn their back to the whiteboard until Mrs C says 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS' 
Mrs C writes a number in the range 0-100 on the whiteboard then she says 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS'
The two students turn and using the base 1-0 blocks make the number as quickly as they can.  The first one finished gets the points.

Making pairs of numbers (adding 2 numbers together)

Today our Superman maths group were learning all about pairs of numbers.  For example there are lots of pairs of numbers that make 14: 0 + 14, 1 + 13, 2 + 12, 3 + 11, 4 + 10, 5 + 9, 6 + 8, 7 + 7, 8 + 6, 9 + 5, 10 + 4, 11 + 3, 12 + 2, 13 + 1 and 14 + 0.

Today our whizz kids were learning how to make a number using pairs of numbers.  Here are some photos of them hard at work:

Stage 2 Counting On

Our stage 2 maths group are learning about counting on.  This is when you start at the biggest number instead of counting all of the number.  Check out our super stars in action while learning how to use this strategy:

Kahjaden started at 5 and counted on 4 more.

Jadyn started at 6 and counted 4 more.

Emily started at 6 and counted 6 more.

Mrs C was setting up a problem for the group to solve using counting on.  They weren't allowed to peek until Mrs C said so.

Yup you are right, she got 11!  She looks pretty pleased with herself.

Amelia was counting on 6 more from 8 - what answer do you think she got?

You're right!  The answer is 14, Amelia was super happy she worked this out herself.

Faith has just joined us from Palmerston North.  She was counting on from 5.

Yes Faith, you are right, the answer is 10!

Mrs C could see we were getting clever at this so she set us the challenge of making some addition problems for our buddy to solve using counting on.  Check out the photos of us in action:
