Recounting the Holidays

Last week on Monday, Mrs C said that we could write a recount of our favourite part of the holidays.  She said we could use 5 different text types to do this and best of all, we got to choose which one we wanted to use:
  • A letter to a friend.
  • A diary entry.
  • A newspaper article.
  • A news report (like they do live on TV).
  • A good old fashioned recount.
We also got to publish in any style we wanted.  Some of us used PicCollage, some of us used Google Docs and some of us used Google Slides.  Mrs C also taught us how to use the graphic tool in Google Docs and Google Slides to create our own illustration to accompany our writing.

Mrs C realised when reading some of our writing that we can't always see when our writing doesn't make sense, our minds are very clever at making it make sense.  So, she decided that once we were finished publishing, we would hand our computer to someone else who was finished and we had our own writing read back to us.  We learned how to utilise the highlighting tool, if my partner read a sentence back to me of my own writing that didn't make sense we could simply say "highlight it" or if it made sense and we were happy with the sentence we could alternatively say "leave it".  This is a peer editing process that made sense and worked for us.

We then went back to our original writing and created a final draft by working through our original published piece and fixing up the parts that needed it.  We had fun doing this and didn't see it as writing again but producing a more polished version after editing and peer review.

Here are our published pieces of writing:

Learning about Place Value in the HQ

We have been looking at representing numbers with base 10 blocks which help us to understand place value and how numbers can be made and broken.  Mrs C taught us a new game called 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS' and we really enjoyed playing boys vs girls.  This is how you play the game:

Mrs C chooses two students to 'verse' each other.
They have to turn their back to the whiteboard until Mrs C says 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS'
Mrs C writes a number in the range 0-100 on the whiteboard then she says 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS'
The two students turn and using the base 1-0 blocks make the number as quickly as they can.  The first one finished gets the points.

Here are a few photos of the kids enjoying this new game:

Rhys and Jorja race to build their number...

Now it's Matthias and Keira's turn!

Aniyah and Leonard face off.

Slytherin - making maths easy!

Mrs C's Slytherin ALiM group have been learning about perimeter and area.  In fact, they are so clever with this that they are now experts and have been helping the rest of Room 2 with their learning of this.  Here are some photos of the Slytherin group in action...

This is the problem we started with - finding the area of a 4cm by 4cm square - (rectangle adapted for the purpose).

Making the  square with cm cubes

Mrs C set us a challenge - of creating our own shapes then working out the perimeter and area of them.  Check out how we did:

Try and stop this clever crew!  Check out their solving below:

Slytherin Flying High

Today Mrs C's Slytherin group made paper planes and used our feet to measure how far they had flown.  Here are some snippets of our time together today:

Persia and Aniyah concentrating on making their paper planes.

Isaia and Jadyn enjoyed folding and bending the paper to try different designs.

Nearly done!

Here we go...up...up...and away!

Finished, here we are with our designer paper planes

Aniyah Shares Equally

In this video Aniyah is proving to Mrs C that she can share equally.  She had to look at the problems in the learning video and work out the answer.  She is learning that division isn't that scary.

Check out the equal sharing pro:

Measurers with Skills

Mrs C's Slytherin group have been learning about measuring.  They have looked at 1cm on a ruler and explored how mm can convert to decimals, fractions and 0.5 is the same as 1/2!  Here are some photos of these measurement experts finding out the exact measurement between two lines.  They are so super clever and could explain how 9.3 is the same as 9 and 0.3 of a cm OR 93mm OR 9cm and 3/10.

These clever kids deserve a special mention for all of their super learning about measurement.

Check them out while they work:

Hmmm, is this shorter than 10cm?  What's this, it's not exactly on a number...oh no!  What do I do now?

Hmmm something makes me think those scissors are bigger than 10cm Aniyah!

I just love Jadyn's enthusiasm, he looks pretty relaxed about this measuring business...

Isaia, I think you're right.   It's come up a tad short.  What are you going to do now?

Check out this clever mathematician...if at first you don't succeed...fold the paper smaller!

Let's get measuring!

Persia measured the distance between her marks and wrote the measurement herself.  Well done!

Wahoo Jadyn, you clever thing.  Look at that accurate measuring.

This cool customer was fairly confident of her measuring and could explain how she got the measurement 21.7cm.

Mr accurate, 24.5cm and he remembered he could say 24.5 or 24 and 1/2 cm

Matthias you are loving learning through measurement and you are getting pretty good at it too.

The rest of Room 2 had to find out what our secret Slytherin group had been up too...
