Room 2 Animation Success

We have been writing Pirate narratives in Room 2.  We learned about writing a sizzling start and trying to finish with a fantastic finale!   I am pretty impressed with the results.  Once we were finished we were allowed to use the App Explain Everything to create our characters and the props we needed.  We then drew the backgrounds for the beginning, middle and end of our story. Mrs C taught us how to bring in the characters, group items together like our pirate and our ship so that they could move as one.  Here are our animations, we hope you love them!

Room 2 talk about their heroes...

For Mr Uluilelata and Ms Souter's 100th combined  birthday Room 2 made a book to share who is their hero and why they are their hero.  We also worked really hard to create our own sketch of our hero using a photograph.  Mrs C scanned them in and then we all went in collaboratively to the Google Doc to add why we chose our particular hero.

Enjoy.

Room 2 Elections

Last term we spent the term creating our own political parties.  We had to work together to collaboratively write our campaign speeches and had to learn how to write the particular text type that enabled this to happen.  We worked really hard all term, created our own campaign posters with our own unique slogans and got right into the spirit of being a politician.

Here is our term's work for you to enjoy:

Back into Moving and Grooving!

We love our fitness and brain breaks!  Here is a short clip of the Superheroes back in the groove...

We Love Art!

During the week we created spring gardens in response to a spring poem we had read.  We used the language clues in the poem to draw what the poem would look like visually.  We used an art channel on YouTube to find out how to draw the bug that we wanted in our spring garden.

We told Mrs C we loved it so much that on Friday afternoon she let us have free drawing time.  This meant we could choose something we wanted to learn how to draw and use the tutorials to learn the steps to create it.  Mrs C took some photos of us all hard at work.

The only criteria Mrs C gave us was that it had to be a challenge...we couldn't choose something that we knew would be easy.

Recounting the Holidays

Last week on Monday, Mrs C said that we could write a recount of our favourite part of the holidays.  She said we could use 5 different text types to do this and best of all, we got to choose which one we wanted to use:
  • A letter to a friend.
  • A diary entry.
  • A newspaper article.
  • A news report (like they do live on TV).
  • A good old fashioned recount.
We also got to publish in any style we wanted.  Some of us used PicCollage, some of us used Google Docs and some of us used Google Slides.  Mrs C also taught us how to use the graphic tool in Google Docs and Google Slides to create our own illustration to accompany our writing.

Mrs C realised when reading some of our writing that we can't always see when our writing doesn't make sense, our minds are very clever at making it make sense.  So, she decided that once we were finished publishing, we would hand our computer to someone else who was finished and we had our own writing read back to us.  We learned how to utilise the highlighting tool, if my partner read a sentence back to me of my own writing that didn't make sense we could simply say "highlight it" or if it made sense and we were happy with the sentence we could alternatively say "leave it".  This is a peer editing process that made sense and worked for us.

We then went back to our original writing and created a final draft by working through our original published piece and fixing up the parts that needed it.  We had fun doing this and didn't see it as writing again but producing a more polished version after editing and peer review.

Here are our published pieces of writing:

Room 2 Exercised Their Rights to a Voice

Today in Room 2 we particpated in the voting process, here is a little video of how we got on:

Interestingly the class were very strong in their views of which political party they felt would best represent them and also who should represent the Mana Electorate.

Someone in our class is learning Japanese!

One of our superheroes has a member of their family in Japan and has also spent time there, living there at one point. Her Mum is learning Japanese but she is also teaching it to Eve. I caught this very sweet moment where Eve was sharing with her peers what she has been learning. I just had to capture it and share.

Superheroes with Superpowers!

This week in Ruma rua the awesome superheroes have been learning how to write explanations.  Some of us are writing our explanations for our political campaigns to persuade others to vote for us.  Some of us are writing explanations about which pet is the best pet and why we think this.

Emily and Keira K worked so hard on their pet explanations that they wanted to share their writing with us.  Ka pai korua!

Here they are being proud of their superpowers:

The class clapped for us.

Loving sharing her work with us.

Can you tell how proud of her writing she is?

We're Famous!

Here are the ever-gorgeous Room 2 Superheroes with the musicians from the NZ Orchestra.  We were lucky they wanted a photo with us.  Maybe they could tell we are the movers, singers and groovers of Rangikura... (shhh don't tell anyone else we said that!)

The NZ Orchestra

Yesterday we had the NZ Orchestra come to visit, they had the brass and percussion instruments with them.  Here is a video of what we learned, which instruments we had and how we got to join in.  We loved our time with them and got inspired by the talented musicians that we spent time with:

Learning about Place Value in the HQ

We have been looking at representing numbers with base 10 blocks which help us to understand place value and how numbers can be made and broken.  Mrs C taught us a new game called 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS' and we really enjoyed playing boys vs girls.  This is how you play the game:

Mrs C chooses two students to 'verse' each other.
They have to turn their back to the whiteboard until Mrs C says 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS'
Mrs C writes a number in the range 0-100 on the whiteboard then she says 'READY, STEADY, SKILLS'
The two students turn and using the base 1-0 blocks make the number as quickly as they can.  The first one finished gets the points.

Here are a few photos of the kids enjoying this new game:

Rhys and Jorja race to build their number...

Now it's Matthias and Keira's turn!

Aniyah and Leonard face off.

Duffy Theatre

We are so lucky at Rangikura, not only do we get free (yes you heard right...free) books every term but we also get the Duffy theatre come and perform.  This recent show was about a supergirl who was trying to save the world from global warming.  She enlisted Duffy's help because she read things but the letters got all jumbled up so instead of trees she planted flower seeds.  Mrs C has put together a short video so you can see what the show was all about...

Partitioning Made Easy!

Check out these cool cats.  See if you can work out how they used this strategy to solve addition problems...

Ready, Set, Go!!!!  How can you add 8 + 6 using partitioning?  Show me!

How did they solve 8 + 6 using partitioning?

A new challenge:

Ready to solve 9 + 5...

How did they solve 9 + 5 using partitioning?

We're ready Mrs C!

There's no stopping us now!

See!

Slytherin - making maths easy!

Mrs C's Slytherin ALiM group have been learning about perimeter and area.  In fact, they are so clever with this that they are now experts and have been helping the rest of Room 2 with their learning of this.  Here are some photos of the Slytherin group in action...

This is the problem we started with - finding the area of a 4cm by 4cm square - (rectangle adapted for the purpose).

Making the  square with cm cubes

Mrs C set us a challenge - of creating our own shapes then working out the perimeter and area of them.  Check out how we did:

Try and stop this clever crew!  Check out their solving below:
